Anyone Fancy a Banjo Fix?
The Latest newsflash from Cheltenham says...
"Greg Liszt, the fabulous Banjo player in the Seeger Sessions band returns to the UK with his regular outfit, Crooked Still for 2 UK dates soon.
CROOKED STILL plus support Jess Klein
January 21st Sheffield City Memorial Hall
Tickets £12.50 each bookable on 0114 2789 789
January 24th National Centre for Early Music York
Tickets £12.50 each bookable on 01904 658338
Crooked Still, the hot young alternative bluegrass group on a mission to bend the boundaries of traditional music. The unlikely combination of banjo, cello, and double-bass drives this low lonesome band, whose captivating vocals and high-wire solos have enraptured audiences all over North America and Ireland since 2001
Four very unique musical personalities merge to form Crooked Still. Aoife O'Donovan's refined, sultry vocals float over Rushad Eggleston's rumbling cello riffs, Dr. Gregory Liszt's (currently playing with Bruce Springsteen’s Seeger sessions Band) futuristic four- finger banjo rolls and Corey DiMario's pulsing bass lines. The resulting acoustic fusion can warp a traditional American tune to the brink of unrecognizability without sacrificing the authenticity of the original sources."
Interesting and maybe disappointing for those not close to Yorkshire that they're not playing anywhere else in the UK.
I heard excerpts from their latest album from off their website in the summer. It was errrm... different, so I'm not sure its my kind of thing, but I'm only about an hour from either venue, so I may give them a try.
G'night folks

Re: Anyone Fancy a Banjo Fix?
Thanx Carrie :)
Funny you should be the first person to respond as I was thinking of you (among all the other friends who wouldn't be able to do the trip to Yorkshire) as I passed on the info. Oh well, one day hopefully.

Re: Anyone Fancy a Banjo Fix?
My English Granddad used to play the Banjo to me when I was a wee kid. He learnt to play during the first World War in the trenches.

Re: Anyone Fancy a Banjo Fix?
Cool nick, I can do either night.
Just cos its late and I'm too lazy to look it up right now - so shoot me, at least I'm honest :p - is Sheffield City Memorial Hall
likely to be the same place as Sheffield City Hall where I saw SSJ a few years ago? If so its a great venue.

Re: Anyone Fancy a Banjo Fix?
Something about banjo's playing remind me of the movie, Deliverance.
