A sad end to Christmas

Many of you will have seen on the news last night about the helicopter crash off Morecambe Bay. There were 2 crew and 5 gas rig workers on board.

So far 6 bodies have been recovered - the search is still ongoing for the seventh.

It is less than 3 lears since 23 chinese cocklers lost their lives to the treacherous sands and tides here (2 were never found). Since then there have been others who have lost their lives here which haven't been such common knowledge around the country, and now this.

Our local emergency and rescue workers have to deal with many tragedies around this area of the coast usually due to the dangerous tides, quicksands and bad weather conditions and now they are out there again, having to pull bodies out of this very unforgiving bay.

So please, if you can spare a thought for the families of the men who died, the men and women of the rescue services who are once again putting their lives at risk and all the other people of this area which is still recovering from the cockling tragedy.

Lets hope that the New Year brings some joy.

Very sad indeed. I grew up in Formby, so I have personal experience of how quickly the tides rise on that coast.

Also, I am trained now as an accident investigator, although I am genuinely grateful that the chances of having to be involved in anything serious are remote, given the 26 year history of my workplace.

I hope that everyone has a safe and happy 2007.

PS. This works - c0cklers.

Just been reading about that tragedy on the net...so sad for everyone involved.

BTW Kath, you can turn off your profanity filter so nothing is censored, including cocklers!

The New Year always brings joy, and a greater appreciation for what we have that has not been lost.

I just read that they stopped the search for the last body. That's really too bad for whomever is waiting for closure.

Too true Punch. It's things like this that make me realise just how fortunate I am.

There's a very sombre mood over this area at the minute. Hopefully the new year will bring some good news for the area for a change.

Didn't mean to bring anybody down by posting this - it's just that something like this, as Jill says, makes you realise how lucky you are
