Had a neuro-psych exam yesterday.

My Dr. referred me to a neurologist. I saw the neurologist a few weeks ago. He did a pretty thorough exam, told me to continue using the medical mj as he thought it had a lot of benefits and he ordered some tests.

He ordered an EEG Image (haven't had that done yet) and a neuro-psych exam.

The Dr. that administered the test had zero warmth but maybe he isn't supposed to respond to anything I say during the test. He could have at least shaken my hand and it would have been nice if he had not talked so low and mumbled!

I had to use colored blocks to replicate patterns which became increasingly difficult to do. There were a ton more abstract geometry tests ( emoticon ) and I finally said "I failed geometry in high school. I hated it!" No response from him.

Then he started in with the math stuff. Those damn riddles like "If George has 97 books and he gives 6 books each to 7 friends and donates 5 books to the library how many books does he have left?" I said "I'm supposed to do this is in my head?!" Yep. Had to do a ton of those. After that he would say a sequence of numbers and then I had to repeat them back to him backwards! That was harder and harder to do as the amount of numbers increased.

There was MORE math after that but at least he gave me a pencil and a piece of paper. One side of the pencil was worn down to the wood (I hate that) and I said "Your pencil sucks." He did eventually get me two other pencils. After the verbal math barrage and all of the geometry crap my brain was just fried and I just blanked out whilst trying to do some easy math equations.

Then I had to do a lot of word things which were not difficult at all but by then I was shaking and felt like crying. I think I did OK on most of the word things except for some pronounciation things. Since my brain accident (don't know what to call it) I have had the most difficulty with my speech and I can sound like a jibbering idiot especially when I am nervous.

Every now and then as I was working on a problem he would say something like "Name 5 famous people." I said "Bruce Springsteen, Ryan Adams, David Gray, Beethoven...how many did I say?" LOL.

Another question was "Who wrote the Sherlock Holmes books?" I said "Ugh. I know the answer to this! My mind is just drawing a blank." Then he said "Who wrote Alice in Wonderland?" I struggled for a second but did come up with Lewis Carrol.

After 3 hours of what I considered to be torture he said "You have completed HALF of this part of the exam. You have to come back in 2 weeks to do the other half." emoticon

Then he gave me a booklet and a scantron sheet (I can't believe they still use those) and sent me out to the waiting room to answer a bunch of psychiatric T/F questions. Those questions were clearly looking for paranoia, schizophrenia, sexual perversions, persecution complexes etc.

The waiting room was poorly lit and I didn't have my reading glasses so I kept double checking the scantron. You misplace one bubble on those and the whole thing can get screwed up. So my test might just come back saying that I am a paranoid schizophrenic with sexual perversions.

I asked to use the bathroom before I left and I slipped a piece of paper under Dr. Warmth's door that just said "Arthur Conan Doyle".

I would really rather have another colonoscopy than go through this thing again.

Oh, that's just so, so sick.

I know how you would have answered some of the questions.

"I think about sex all of the time." True
"I love to talk about sex." True
"I participate in perverted sexual practices." True

That's another problem I had with the test. Who decides what is perverted? One person's pleasure is perverted to others. Ever have to discuss oral sex with the 70+ crowd?

Yes, that is true. I think it's mostly the southern states and they just haven't gotten around to taking stupid laws out of the books yet. Every state has ridiculous laws on their books.

You would focus on that, PB.

Re: Had a neuro-psych exam yesterday.

Well, I had the second half of this aggravating exam last Monday. More damn geometry, drawing pictures, memory tests, word things etc.

One of the things I had to do was look at old drawings (they looked like they were from the 1950's) of people in different backgrounds. I had to make up a story to go with the picture. The story had to have a beginning, a middle and end and then I had to give it a title.

One picture had a woman looking into a room and she looked angry. I said "There is a child in the room but you can't see her. The woman is angry because of something the child did. Dr. Mean Jeans said "What did the child do?" I said "She skipped school to ride her horse." He wanted to know what was going to happen next and I said "The woman is going to send the child to bed without supper." Dr. Mean Jeans said "And what is the title of this story?" By then I was feeling a bit snarky with Dr. Mean Jeans and I said "NO supper for you!"

Another picture had a woman who was collapsed on the floor with her upper body face down on a sofa and her arms around her head. It was clear to me that she was weeping.

I told Dr. Mean Jeans "This woman is crying. She just found out that someone she loved has died." Dr. Mean Jeans snapped "Who died?" I said "A lover. She will cry for awhile but she is going to be OK. In the spring she will plant forget-me-nots and roses in her garden to remember him by. The title of this is 'Grief'". Given that it had not even been a week since I had learned of Stephen's death my voice was cracking and tears spilled down my face.

Dr. Mean Jeans showed no reaction to any of that. In fact he never showed a reaction to anything I said or did with the exception of a slight smile when I told him his pencil sucked for the first half of the test. His pencil sucked for the second half of the test too but I said "Do you not have a pencil sharpener here?!" and he went and got me two sharp pencils. I am picky about my writing implements.

After I finished telling stories about the drawings he said "We are finished now." I said "That figures. That was the only thing I liked doing out of this whole damn thing!"

Re: Had a neuro-psych exam yesterday.

So, today I met with Dr. Mean Jeans to go over my test results. Turns out that he is not as cold and mean as I thought he was. I had suspected that he had to act that way during the testing so the results wouldn't be skewed. He was actually nice and somewhat kind this time.

He went over the I.Q. results first. He said my language skills were in the 99th percentile. Good thing grammar didn't seem to a huge part of the tests.

That was the good news, I guess. I scored very poorly (embarrassingly so) in some other areas. All of that effing geometry !@#$ and math, which I used to be very good at.

He said my test results indicated, over and over again with the various tests, that one area of my brain has been affected by the brain 'accident' I had a year ago in September. He said I have probably recovered some of what I lost and I may recover more of it.

Then he had to go and give me a diagnosis. My diagnosis is Dementia related to a vascular incident.

That kind of freaked me out. Patients admitted with dementia were the little old ladies that would throw wads of their feces at you when you walked into their rooms.

He explained to me that it is just a term used to define a loss of intellect or cognitive function and in my case it is just one area of the brain. That really didn't make me feel any better.

He said I could go to occupational therapy to try to improve the area of my brain that has been affected. I asked him what I would do there and he said I'd have to play with the blocks and do the drawings and other crap like that. Fat chance that I will put myself through that after this damn test.

My psychiatric tests showed that I was focused on somatic issues but he said "That is normal because you are in pain a lot." Also told me that I am 'highly emotional' and that I have loss and grief issues. Really? I never knew that about myself. Duh. I pretty much told him that when I walked in the door the first time.

This test costs around 3 grand and I'm not sure what I got out of it. Other than him telling me I should only play the piano for my own pleasure because the part of my brain that was good at that before doesn't work right anymore. He actually said I should quit taking lessons right now because it's too frustrating for me when I can't do what I used to be able to do. I think that will relieve more of my Russian piano's teacher's frustration than mine.

So, I have Dementia but I am not crazy if that makes any sense.

And, sorry, Heiko, the tests did not indicate that I was sexually perverted.

Di, do you live near cornfields? My great grandma that suffered from dementia was constantly wandering into the cornfields.

Mom did some memory recovery activities after her chemo, and I will say that for the first time in about 15 years, she remembered to defrost the turkey for Thanksgiving.

I guess you could look at it as you were going to end up a crazy old lady anyways. (And hey, I can smell my own) Now you're certified!

How did I miss this earlier??

So Di, one part of your brain is Demented. That's not bad. The rest of your brain, then, is not demented. I am not surprised you scored so highly on the language bit. Who cares about the other stuff. Your thinking and feeling bits seem pretty intact to me.

Love you xxx
