Karen, I am a direct descendent of August Gustav Koberstein, Sr of Brandenburg, Germany. He was my great, great Grandfather. He immigrated to North Dakota, and later Oregon after my Great Grandfather immigrated there at age 16 along with his younger sister a year previously/ They all arrived through Ellis Island and made a new life in the USA in 1888.

Koberstein

My Grandfather was Paul, He was full blooded German and he married Hilda Wallestad. Her family immigrated from Norway. I haven't researched that side of the family, but she was full blooded Norwegian, and I understand that there is a family tree book going around.

Lara, check out Visit Britain. It has some offerings for tourists that are less expensive to order in advance from the US. The best things i got were a three-day unlimited pass for the Underground (one ride is about $6) and a 24-hour tourbus pass that included three cruises on the Thames. They were part of a package with other stuff that I didn't take advantage of (unfortunately). I think the pass paid for itself in all the rides I took on the Underground. They also had packages for travelling to Bath and Stonehenge (and other places) from London.

Karen - my great grandparents on one side came from Sweden and my grandparents on my dad's side were Germans from Russia (Germans who emigrated to Russia in 1750).

Most travellers use Oyster cards in London for the tubes and busses. We like to use them every time we go. You can buy them from the machines or ticket windows at the tube station, and you save quite a bit that way too.

wow, thanks for sharing that info with me, Carrie and Ramona. Fascinating stuff. So we have German, Norwegian, and Swedish and also a bit of Russian influenece thrown in.

I have always wanted to visit the Scandinavian countries, feeling an affinity with their way of decorating their houses and their crafts and traditions. So it was a pleasant surprise to discover recently that I have Danish ancestors on my dad's side. We also have a dear longtime Swedish friend called Swerker who is a lovely man and he has always made me want to visit Sweden.

Ah, they didn't have Oyster Cards when I was there.
This is the siteto order one from outside the UK.

Ramona - so you're part Scandawhovian, eh? : ) Norway is one the places I most want to visit as it is reportedly gorgeous.

Hey, thanks for that site! We're considering the London Card for the trip, because we are definitely hitting some sites, but we need to add up the cost of the attractions and see if we'll save. It's hard to know anything for certain, since we want to take in as many games as we can, and it might be a last minute ticket hookup.

A guy I work with said that when the 84 Olympics were in LA, he showed up a few hours early to the venues, and people were both selling and giving tickets away. I think with the proximity to Europe, that might not be the case in London, but it sounds like in general, tickets are not difficult, but rather more just problematic in general to get.

You have to remember that we Americans consider 1950's dining sets "antiques." We do not have loads of old stuff just lying about around the country, because we are only 200 years old. Which is actually your fault, because it took you bloody Europeans long enough to find us!

America is actually a little older than the US.
We sent out folks to find something way before 1492, but these guys were so disgusted from what they found that they said the earth was flat and you´d fall from the edge if you came to close to what would be America.

LOL, I'm aware that America came first and the US came much later. But the formation of the Americas into modern nation states occurred when the Europeans settled here. It took England a few tries before they were able to figure out how to deal with the wilderness!

Oy, Karen, that is a crazy question since most Americans are soooo mixed up it almost doesn't matter!

My paternal great great grandfather Christenson and his wife came over from Denmark in the mid to late 1800's. My paternal great grandmother Christenson was Irish, but I don't think we have an arrival date for them.

My paternal great grandfather Anderson was also Irish and had the nickname "Red," lol. My paternal great grandmother Anderson was a Munyon, and she was also Irish. Again, no arrival date.

My maternal great grandfather Molson came over from Germany, but what is now defined as Poland in terms of the border in 1912. My maternal great grandmother Molson was Ukrainian, and her family came over to America in the early 1900's, hated it, and then returned, LOL. For the life of me, I cannot remember her maiden name, but it was Slavic.

My maternal great great grandfather Fountain (nee La Fountaine) was French Swiss, and came over at the turn of the 20th century. My maternal great grandmother was an Eggen, and she was Swiss German. She was also 5'11 and could pick up the end of a couch with 1 hand to swat at me when I ran behind there after misbehaving!

The majority of my blood is Danish, Irish, and German, although my sister and I are the only ones that appear more Scandinavian or Aryan in appearance. My great grandma also gave me extra wide feet.

That's a lovely mix Lara :D Hey maybe you and I are related, since I have Danish ancestors too way back! :) We could be sort of cousins! Half my blood is Irish too so we must definitely be related. Maybe I'm your Aunt or something, in which case you should start showing me a bit more respect young Lady.

ps the half of me that isn't Irish is a mix of Scottish, Welsh, Danish and Liverpudlian, but mostly Scottish. So I am basically a Celt.
I said Celt you cheeky person.
