Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." - Martin Luther King jnr
I love this, Martin Luther King, Jr was an amazing speaker and I believe in the same principles.
However, we waved our flag when the ashes were still flying, and before the dust settled on ground zero. It's deeply patriotic, and symbolises our belief in freedom- "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"
The flag honours everything we sacrificed in order to have that freedom. Red for the blood that was shed, hardiness & valour, White; The colour white in the American seal and transferred to the American flag stands for purity and Blue, the colour of the Chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice.
Osama Bin Ladin wanted to take all that from us, and yes, one man did create a network of terror that ulimately caused thousands of deaths on 9-11.
He attacked us, and caused a war. If you look at the history of war in any given country, when a battle is won, the flag is waved victoriously. We still grieve our dead, we don't necessarily condone the kill, but we wave our flag in honour.
As school children, we pledged allegiance to the flag every morning with our hand on our hearts. We pledge at baseball games, football games, in the military, on the 4th of July, Memorial Day, Veterans Day-We pledge allegiance all our lives. We pledge when we hang the flags outside our houses.
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all"
This is something that is deeply imbedded in the American people. When we fall, our flag rises and win we win a battle, we raise our flag. It's about unity in our people, and rising up together. We raised it the day we lost so many lives on 9/11 and we raised it when Osama Bin Ladin was taken out.
I see nothing wrong with that.

Re: ..
After 9/11 I started wearing my cross because I wanted to be close to something much bigger than any country.

Re: ..
Nice one, Carrie. I think 9/11 made a lot of people drop to their knees and start wearing their crosses again.
I remember driving to work a couple days after it all happened. It was a 45 minute commute from Redondo Beach to the miracle mile in LA. I always passed LAX & enjoyed watching the planes take off. This particular morning there were no planes & after I passed the airport and was driving into LA, "Imagine" came on the radio. I pulled over and just wept. I'll never forget it.
Ironically on the drive home, I watched the first plane land after all flights were cancelled. It flew right over my car & it was an incredible feeling.

That was the eeriest part fo 9/11 for me - the no flights policy. O'Hare is one of the busiest airports in the US so there's a plane overhead every few minutes. So to not see one for days was so strange and quiet. The quiet was nice, but too strange.

Re:
It's all good, Karen. It's just that a lot of people don't understand our patriotism so I was just hoping to clarify. I felt a bit strange about it all too, but I'm glad they took him out. It was the best way, otherwise if we tried holding him and taking him through the American justice system, not only would it have been a rediculous waste of time, but I'm sure there would be a lot of kidnappings and beheadings, not to mention increased acts of terrorism.
