Re: ThE Austin Pit Crew ~ chapter 6

That was a very eloquent post, Jo!!

I was teaching that day-7th grade. Between classes, a teacher friend came down our hall and told us (teachers only) about the first plane. My first thought, naivity now, was that a plane had left LaGuardia...accident? Then a little bit later, as the kids are getting seated and we are about to start the next class, we got a note from our principal to turn on the TVs and watch it with the students. I didn't agree with this decision (as the note told what had happened). By then the 2nd plane had hit. We watched for a while and then the Pa. crash was reported. My students got anxious, nervous. I remember saying to comfort them (and me!), "Maybe this is a coincidence. Let's not panic. " And a 12 year male student calmly said, "Mrs. Perry, this is not a coincidence." A teacher down the hall had friends/relatives who worked in the towers. Her class had to be split amongst our classes while she made calls. I couldn't even get thru to Elgin at work. Dylan was home sick. Jenna was in first grade. It's amazing how you can just remember the details of that day. Is it Toby Keith that has the song about 9/11-something about what were you doing on that day? He mentions something like "were you in a classroom of children? " That song always takes me back to that day, that feeling and that little boy who with his calmness and soft-spoken honesty allowed me to be strong for my students.

It's been a pretty good weekend here. Beautiful outside. Splurged a bit at The Fresh Market yday--pumpkin spice coffee and some great smelling-fall-scented pinecones.

Off to prepare for the week.
Have a great Sunday night, everyone!

Re: ThE Austin Pit Crew ~ chapter 6

the History Channel had some fascinating shows on over the weekend... Corey went and grabbed a big book I have all about the World Trade Center and did his best to follow along through the pictures, even trying to grasp an understanding for how many people died, and how many buildings were destroyed. He started showing interest in the whole topic about 3 months ago, and really seems to understand it pretty well..
Of couse he has recollection of that day but through such lessons.. I have the vivid memories of the seconds as they ticked by.... was still in bed with the radio on when I heard of the first plane crash.... then I recall hearing theDJ talk about the crash at the Pentagon... my first thougth was that somehow they got the story horribly worng.. then the phone rang; it was my ex... he told me to turn on the TV... We spent a few minutes on the phone together, and he told me that some freinds we knew (that he had grown up with out on Long Island) were in the process of moving their office off LI and into the WTC..... so the wonder and worry began.. then the 2nd plane hit..... I stayed glued to the TV as I got ready for work... packing a lot extra since there was a chance we could go into lockdown..... so I had a few days worth of stuff loaded in the car~ Had a meeting before my shift so I went in 'early" only to find they cancelled the meeting on account of the events, so i went to the unit.. and was bombarded by everyone dying to know what was going on. So I answered as many questions as i could for everyeone! Then admitted a little boy who was 15 weeks early~ At one point a bird flew fast and close to the windown near my admission bed and it made me jump, since I knew all air traffic was grounded..... went home after my shift and was glued to the TV for hours again, unable to will myself to sleep~ My sister and her hubby were in the ocean on a cruise, my mom was in FL helping babysit Grayson who was only 3 1/2.... so I just sat there alone
By nightfall all the coverage of ground Zero had an eerie sound.... a sound I was too familkiar with.... the whistling sound coming from everywhere.... a few years before this my dad had started selling these things called PASS alarms... to be worn by the firefighters and activated when they went into a fire... they automaitcally go off if the firefighter does not move for a set period of time (usually 5 miuntes)... it can be stopped with a gentle shake... but to watch the TV coverage and continually hear that sound... the reporters making mention of it, yet not knowing... for every place they heard that sound..... one of the 343 firefighters PASS alarms lay motionless in the rubble near them~

Ugly rainy day here yeaterday... looked nicetoday from the windows at work.... I slpurged a tad myself... witht he temps finally nice, i opened a few windows... figured the worst that can happen was a bit of sniffling and sneezing~ I SO regret opening the darn windows!!!!! I've felt miserable since about 8pm Saturday night, adn my throat is red and raw~ I'd love a dose of Nyquil to help me get thru the night, but another shift looms in a matter of hours~ chicken noodle soup for dinner :) mmm mmm good!

Re: ThE Austin Pit Crew ~ chapter 6

had to cry myself to sleep last night ... just as I was getting ready to call it a night.. got a message from a lifelong friend who still lives back in our hometown... he said he was out at the soccer filed near where we went to school watching his son play soccer .... John Fogerty was doing a small show at the Horse training center up the street... but he knew right away that was not Fogerty he heard..... it was Bruce Springsteen

Eloquents are like buses Jo, you never see one for ages, and then three come along at once.

Clarification for my American friends, a "bus" is a means of public tranportation widely used in Europe, even by people who can afford not to use them.

Re: ThE Austin Pit Crew ~ chapter 6

Back to 9/11/2001...I was only at school in the morning because we had our scholarship students speaking to the big donors at a breakfast. I went home and watched coverage on TV, but I realized the commentators were just speculating and there was really nothing to learn by sitting there. Then one of the buildings fell down right before my eyes on TV. So then I thought maybe it was a good idea to stay and watch. Eventually, I shut the TV off and went shopping. (I still didn’t understand that this was terrorism.)

So, I’m at the mall, one of the largest in the country, and they decided to close the whole mall. I worked in retail for 12 years and we never once closed for anything, not even in terrible blizzards leaving 2 feet of snow or when temps were -27 degrees. So I started to think this was a bigger deal than I thought.

I went outside to my car and was struck by the silence and the empty sky. I live 15 minutes from one of the busiest airports in the world so there are always planes overhead. But they shut down O’Hare, so there was just this gorgeous blue sky with no clouds or planes, just beautiful sunshine and silence. When I first heard Bruce sing about the sky being the same unbelievable blue, I thought of that sky.

When I got home, there was a message not to come to work because there had been a bomb threat. Then on the local news, they started talking about whether the Sears Tower in Chicago might be hit next because it was the tallest building in the world. I later heard from friends who worked downtown that their companies were recommended by law enforcement to evacuate so there would be fewer people in the city if it was hit. Surreal.

Re: ThE Austin Pit Crew ~ chapter 6

9/11/2001 is a day that changed my life.
I decided two things:
1. I would not wait till Sandy graduated (she was in 1st grade) to leave MWNB.
2. I would see Bruce Springsteen live in concert at least once before I died.

The first thing I did when it became clear it was a terrorist attack was to fill up my car in case we had to evacuate.
I remember the ambulances racing down Route 17 towards the city.
My son was an EMT for Mahwah. His first call that day was to UPS. Two guys attacked another guy of mid eastern decent by bashing his head into the wall of the men's room.

Got a postcard from Wombat.
He's hiking in the Canadian Rockies.

He says he's "warning" me that he will return to retake his Page King title. emoticon

A year after 9/11 I was trying to get info on Bruce's upcoming gig in London. I stumbled upon bs.net. That day changed my life as much as any other. That chain of events still gives me incredibly mixed emotions.

I have no doubt, though, that coming here at Carrie's suggestion was one of my better decisions. emoticon
