Re: Cattails/Punks
I'm thinking I may have misinterpreted your post on the cattails exploding in a sexual manner. That's why I chuckled. Don't ask me why. You probably meant it in a totally different way.
It must be the medication I'm on. Sorry.

Re: Cattails/Punks
I love cattails, they grow everywhere in Indiana, mainly along ditchbanks and other bodies of water. My favorite surprise is a sandhill crane emerging from a patch and taking flight with their long legs.
As for "punks," I worked at a fireworks store when I was 19, and the punks we sold were actually camel poop based because I guess it made them slower burning. They're nice because you don't have to have a live flame near highly flammable products.
I love the smell of newly cut mint fields. In the summer time, it's like Wrigley's Doublemint gum everywhere!

Re:
Hey everybody...just saw this. To the OP, I can verify your memory. As a young boy I went to a summer day camp in Chatham and they had Cattails or what we called "punks". We would take them home and burn them as punks/insect repellents in the summer time. i don't remember if they worked or not. Great memory!

Re: Cattails/Punks
We always picked them on the way home from vacation. But you had to dry them before they were burned. Sometimes they would blow up and have a ton of little fuzzies...we would run around throwing or beating each other
Great when they burned smell and to keep bugs away
