I use to get cattails/punks years ago....we use to
get them on the way home from the lake and I think florida. We use to dry them in the sun...then we would burn them to keep the skeeters away. I do remember if you knicked them....they would kind of explode with lil fuzzies all over the place....before the burn thatt is...good for a good cattail tar and feather fight......

I enjoyed the smell ..nothing like a good ol burnt punk emoticon emoticon

I love the smell of them too. I bought some small fireworks for the 4th of July and got some man-made punks with them. They kind of smelled like the real thing but it was still missing something. Any idea how long to dry them? I'm guessing that it's been a while for you too.

I see so many different types of animal life during the year. Deer are quite abundant and the fall can be dangerous with them crossing the road. I narrowly missed hitting a fox during the spring this year. I haven't seen them too much lately but in the spring and early summer there are a ton of turkey vultures flying about. I've seen 20 or more of them flying at different times. I think they hand in that area looking for roadkill.

One time a couple of years ago I was driving home and saw a hawk flying low near the road. It swooped low over an open field and was flying about ten feet off the ground on the other side of the road from me. It cruised next to me for almost a half a mile. It was a beautiful sight.

I also cross over the Delaware river on my ride. I love opening the widows to get the crosswind through the car. It's especially good during the winter. There are times the the river is covered in fog and crossing the bridge is surreal. You can barely see the car in front of you but as soon as you get off the bridge, it's perfectly clear.

Your commute sounds great, really. I would love that drive over the river.

We don't see many wild animals in the Denver metro area, however some wild animals are moving into some populated areas further west, but I believe it's more due to the humans moving into their area to begin with.

A woman who lived in the mountains was eaten by a bear a couple weeks ago. She had been feeding the bears for ages (which you are not supposed to do!) and one day, she was literally eaten by one.

I love cats, but I sure as heck wouldn't be feeding the mountain lions if I lived in their area.

mm Cattails... we call them Sigars... and they are a pest in our waters (as they grow fast and clot up the waterways...) I like them as decoration, but sure will try the insect repellent function...!

I remember it took a few weeks....I think sometimes we attempted to burn part dry. The problem is as they dry sometimes they explode so they can carry-on. Guess its like that in life too. I just looked
something up but it was related to flower arrangements it suggested spraying with hairspray to keep from EXPLODING. I guess as it dries you could do that, although its flammable it might help the drying. We always laid ours flat in the sun. One article suggested hanging it upside down................
I'll be jealous of your smokin' punks....

I put the ones I picked yesterday outside under a clear glass stove pot lid. I don't want to wait too long to try and burn them, I want to do it this summer. I hope that I didn't do the wrong thig. I'll have to look and see when I get home. Hopefully they haven't exploded.

As for the smoke/smell; how about I put some in a zip-lock bag and send it to you??

NO... glass lids not a good idea......it will hold the moisture as the sun heats the glass......or if it just heats up...has to be dry heat....PLUS a glass can act as a magnifying glass if it is in the bright sun and cause AFIRE..then your punks will be up in smoke!

Even if the punks are in the shade with a glass lid it will still be to much MOISTURE and 'cause them to ROT.

good luck
