Foreign exchange student harangs teacher
Today in one of my classes we were talking briefly about the OJ TV show thing. One kid said, "Michael Jackson ought to go on TV and say how he would have molested those kids if he had of really done it." Probably not the most tasteful thing ever said, but I did not find it worthy of a reprimand or anything. Another kid says "Michael Jackson started life as a black man and is finishing it as a white woman." That got a half-hearted chuckle from the class and we were moving on into the Scarlet Letter and the German exchange student in the back explodes. "You are all mean gay-bashers, " she shouts. "You are allowing gay-bashing to go on in your class," she yells at me. I was really taken aback. I told her that, as far as I knew, Michael Jackson had never claimed to be gay and that the joke was about his change in appearance, not his sexuality. She was really charged up. I felt bad about her being offended, but I do not feel anyone was gay-bashing. I really like the student and have worked with her a lot: her English is functional, but not very good and she is for sure not very conversant in American wise-guy satire. Just wanted to get that one off my chest. Thanks for reading.

Maybe the German exchange student had interpreted that you were gay bashing. It might take her awhile to understand things that are said. You might want to explain the difference of a pedophile and a gay person to her.

Maybe, "The Tonight Show With Mr Hughes".
