Hospice was good, but the nurse was only there about 15 minutes each day, and not every day until her last week. Is that normal? I didn't realize they wouldn't be there more (I guess I should have read further in the booklets they provided). At first, it was scary to administer meds to her even if it was just under the tongue. But it's amazing what you can do when you have to, and it was a nice thing to be able to do for her. My Mom was given ativan for sleep before she died. I do know a bit about kinesieology though... Everyone has trigger spots in their nervous system, that can "knot up" and cause twitches and tightness and pain. Mine happens to be in my lower back L3, L4, but the knot is in my left trapezius muscle (top of shoulder, connects to the neck muscles) and I get a headache or twitches over my left eye. Get the knot massaged out, pain goes away. Suggest massage therapy with special attn to neck and shoulders. Don't drink w/ the Ativan (at least not much). Thats my 2 cents worth. However, I do also believe that the only way out is through- ie better to face any real difficulties head on, and not avoid (trust me, I've been very good at avoiding in my life and it cost me dear- no more). The other thing I wanted to add is that there is the saying in psychology / psychotherapy circles that 'things get worse before they get better'. That might not mean that, say, a muscle twitch gets worse, but it does point to a real truth which is that any type of therapy is an emotionally bumpy ride, and there have been times I've hit rock bottom in therapy, but over all it's all a move in the positive. I've just realised Kitty that you asked a simple question about a specific drug treatment for a specific symptom- all this diatribe about therapy may not be want you want / need at all! It depends very much on how you think / view the world, and there are loads of different types of psychotherapy out there. CBT is very good at dealing with 'here and now' problems in a 'here and now way'- it examines the links between thoughts and behaviours / feelings, seeing our thinking patterns as highly influential on our feelings and behaviours, and sets to challenge the irrational thoughts that cause emotional difficulty (eg "I'm useless if I don't do things perfectly", "everybody has to like me for me to feel good enough" etc etc). Straightforward behavioural therapy looks at how our dysfunctional behaviours are reinforced by rewards and punishments, and sets to change our behaviour by changing the reinforcers. Systemic or family therapy looks at the impact and interplay between individuals and the systems they are in (families, work places etc) and views the individual symptom as something that is being expressed on behalf of the 'system'- eg a child might present with very challenging behaviour on behalf of the family system, because mum and dad need a focus on the child's problems to avoid real difficulties in their marriage. Can work for adults too. Psychodynamic or analytic therapies tend to be deeper and view the role that childhood experience plays as vital to understanding and working with emotional distress as adults. For me this was the one, but it's such a personal decision. There's a paper called "All have won so all must have prizes" (a quote from Alice in Wonderland) that looks at outcomes in therapy, and demonstrates that the single biggest predictor of positive outcome is 'fit' between the therapist / threrapy style and the client. I've been in and out of dynamic therapy (including dramatherapy, which was great for me in helping to avoid what was effectively 'intellectual masturbation'(!) in therapy by not relying so much on words). I can't really advise Kitty, it so much depends on what's right for you and what your own personal history is. Hope this helps even tho' it's not answering your question!nondisclosed_email@example.com (dabedbenshim)Wed, 15 Nov 2006 02:13:03 +0000 Re: Has Anyone Heard of being Prescribed Ativanhttps://btrampsandtrampettesrefugepart2.runboard.com/p8268,from=rss#post8268https://btrampsandtrampettesrefugepart2.runboard.com/p8268,from=rss#post8268The wind here is howling like mad, I'm going to go make dinner (before a power interruption) and take my wee pill. Oh yes, I'm fully aware of the cause of the stress/anxiety, but I've dealt with high stress most of my adult life and I've never ended up getting spasms over it. I did see my Dr. about this last week, as it has been going on for over two weeks and it is very bothersome. It's not my eyelid that is having the spasms, but right beneath the eye itself. She prescribed Ativan for me because she says it's stress/anxiety that's causing it. Yet, I can't take the Ativan during the day, because it makes me sleepy. I may E-mail her and ask her if maybe there is something else I can take that won't cause drowsiness. I was wondering if any others ever had something like this that doesn't seem to go away and what they did that helped. I had a big meeting today and I had to gently put my finger on the area so people wouldn't notice it, others can actually see it twitching. It's really bizarre.nondisclosed_email@example.com (kittykat1)Wed, 15 Nov 2006 01:31:24 +0000 Re: Has Anyone Heard of being Prescribed Ativanhttps://btrampsandtrampettesrefugepart2.runboard.com/p8233,from=rss#post8233https://btrampsandtrampettesrefugepart2.runboard.com/p8233,from=rss#post8233Hi- that's an odd one- ativan is another name for lorazipan- it's a benzodiazapene ('benzos'), ie same family of drugs as valium, diazepan, nitrazepan etc. These are only to be used for very short periods of time (a few weeks at tops) because they are very addictive, and to my knowledge are really only used these days for severe sleep disorders, short-term treatment of anxiety (should always be in association with psychological treatments such as Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy), and to help control of certain types of seizure. I'm a clinical psychologist and NOT a medical doctor so you need to seek medicap opinion, but in my 17 years or so practice and working very closely with psychiatrists I have never heard of a use for a straightforward muscular spasm (unless, I guess, maybe is it linked to any kind of epileptic seizure activity) and the psychiatrists I work with are extremely cautious about prescribing any sort of benzo at all. Hope this helps, but please only use this response as a guide to asking questions of a medic, cos I am only writing out my own experience as psychologist in the UK.
