Oh my God you look oh so serious, and young... Well for the Dutch people my screen name is obvious. It is the name the locals give to the city I come from - Dordrecht. Even though many people consider it the armpit of the Netherlands (judging from the reactions I get when I tell them where I'm from) I'm proud of the place. It is the oldest city in Holland , that is the first place in Holland to receive city rights and this happened around the year 1005. Dordrecht (originally called Thuredrecht named after the tributary the Thure) was the capital of the Netherlands before Amsterdam received that honor. The city played a big role in Dutch history especially during the Dutch war of independance from the Spanish which lasted from 1574 (when we declared independance) till 1648 when we finally won from the Spanish. The war is known as the eighty year war.  Dordrecht is situated on an Island in the river delta near Rotterdam which was formed in the heavy storm of february 1421 flooding Dordrecht and killing almost the its entire population. Legend has it that only ten people survived. From the early 18th century until 1865 (when the death penalty was abolished) convicts were herded off to the Isle of Dordrecht for imprisonment or for execution. Since then many people associate Dordrecht with crime. nondisclosed_email@example.com (dordt)Tue, 25 Sep 2007 01:05:49 +0000 Re: What's the history behind your screen name?https://btrampsandtrampettesrefugepart2.runboard.com/p91825,from=rss#post91825https://btrampsandtrampettesrefugepart2.runboard.com/p91825,from=rss#post91825You have to ask ?
