I suspect that more athletes are involved in this horrific practice, maybe NFL and NBA stars. Let's hope that the whole lot becomes public and something is done to curb the practice.

I think we are sometimes too forgiving of athletes who behave in totally inappropriate ways. As an example, I would point to Bryant who at least was guilty of having sex with a woman less than 30 minutes after meeting her, yet he still has the big pay cheque and the corporate sponsors.

Someone made a comment on a TV sports talk show yesterday about how dog fighting was big in the hip-hop world and this was another unfortunate mixing of big money athletes and the "thug" culture which some hip-hop glamorizes. I did not know dog-fighting was big in hip-hop, so that was news to me.

Giving this more thought, the NFL has to suspend Vick and I think they will. Sure, the guy is innocent until proven guilty, but that is for the courtroom, not necessarily anywhere else. Let's say a teacher or a mailman or a nurse were involved in something like this, with federal charges that were all over the papers: they would be suspended (with pay) immediately. The NFL has a reputation to uphold. Suspend any and every player that has a run-in with the law -- pay them their salary, but keep them out of uniform. And do it to all the thugs in Cincinnati, too -- they are a humiliation.

Thus, the Lemon has spoken.

And the Lemon speaks again:

Artie Lange made some great points about Vick on the Stern show yesterday. He said that Vick must be a mentally deranged lunatic. Vick is rich, successful, fawned over, with huge endorsement deals and as much talent as anyone in the NFL. So why jeopardize it all with something so tawdry and image-destroying as dog fighting? Artie said that he understood why some people were in this stuff: the money. Still wicked and vile, but at least it makes some sense. Vick must be a cruel, deranged maniac. He does not need the money and he does not need the potential PR meltdown, so what is going on in his head except derangement? The American public loves its pets and this guy is hanging, electrocuting, and body slamming dogs to death. This is worse to the US public than beating his wife or girlfriend could ever be (not that I agree with that, but you know that it is true, fellow Americans).

Can you imagine the abuse this guy is going to take on the road if he does play? It will make the reaction to Barry Bonds look like confetti and cocktails.

it's big in the hip hop community cause it's big in the black community. dog fighting is all too alive and well around here. and most of the time when an arrest is made the people involved are black. i once had to work with a black guy who would openly talk about his dog fighting activities. i've seen black guys with fighting dogs tattooed on their arms. i used to do volunteer work at my local animal shelter and if a black man inquired about the dogs up for adoption 9 times out of 10 he was only looking for 1 of 2 breeds, pit bulls or rottwielers (sp). i expect this post will be deleted for being "racist" but it's the truth and i ain't afraid to say it

I was reading some of the posts on the ESPN Falcons message board and there were some people saying that dog fighting was part of Vick's culture and that people did not understand. I guess that is their way of beginning to play the race card. Overwhelmingly though, the posts there are blasting Vick.

I think Vick is done. The court of public opinion will have their say and he will fade away into obscurity.

People are more forgiving of infidelity and sex scandals. They will NOT forgive cruelty to animals.

Let's hope not, anyway.

they were reporting on ESPN last night that he will play. unless the Falcons suspend him, but how do you sit a guy making that kind of money? the commish will look like a total hypocrite if he does play, with his new "get tough" policy. they want to play him? fine....i hope he gets taken out on a stretcher

Well, that's a shame Chip. It makes me lose faith some days. We're the same society who can't get enough of Paris Hilton and Brittney Spears, so why should anything surprise me?

When I watched the footage of a dog fight (only once, then I couldn't see it anymore), I almost cried. How inhumane are we??!!!
