Arizona is onto something

funny how the story is about support for the law yet the picture is of a protest against it

if you're looking for illegals in Arizona...a border state...who else are you going to target? white people? no, you're going to check people who are hispanic. and if they are here legally and have nothing to hide they shouldn't mind. you're comparing this to nazi Germany is !@#$ ridiculous. i'm sick of criminals getting a pass cause society is afraid of offending someone. seems i recall hearing that the Isreali airline El Al (sp) has never had a hijacking....ever. and there's only one reason...they racial profile

I know we have problems with too many illegal immigrants, but this law is goofy. I was born in the USA, but I don't carry my birth certificate everywhere I go. Other than that, what "papers" does anyone have to prove they are citizens?

Yes, but some of them were legal immigrants.

Yes and some of them slaughtered the real Americans and put them on reservations.

I haven't read the Arizona law, how much are the companies that hire the illegal aliens going to be fined for employing them?

Exactly! Hit the companies who hire them where it hurts and we'll have a chance of stopping illegal immigration. Some businesses prefer to hire people who have no legal rights rather than American citizens and legal immigrants because they can pay them very little and treat them like garbage. In my opinion, the business people who do that are unpatriotic and should have their own citizenship revoked.

Hmmmm...some 72% of Americans polled are in favor of Arizona's new law. Americans Wonder why such a high figure. It really doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out.

I feel like I should explain this to Jo. It's not that 72% of Americans are heartless. I think it's about the attitudes of many immigrants. Many consider it beneath them to learn English or to speak it when they do know it. I'm speaking from direct experience because I work in colleges where I have a lot of contact with immigrants and 1st generation Americans (their kids). In fact, many immigrants who work hard to learn English and speak it all the time have told me they get put down by their family and friends for doing that.

Many of us are also bothered by the demonstrations by illegal immigrants demanding legal rights and citizenship from the US government. I feel for the people who work hard and are here to give their families a better life, but I think they should be demanding better treatment from their own government rather than the US.

I also used to advise international students who had to jump through a lot of hoops to get here legally, so I'm with Lord Stanley on that issue. It is difficult to come here legally and it does take a long time, but millions of people stand in that line every year and wait to do it legally and I don't think anyone should be able to jump ahead of them in line especially if they came here illegally. I had international students whose families had been waiting for many years and when they finally got the visa, their oldest child was 21 and couldn't legally come here with his/her parents. They were supposed to watch their whole family move halfway across the world without them. Some managed to get student visas, but that didn't allow them to stay legally once their college education was completed. I'm sure there were many families who chose to stay in their home country rather than split up their families.

Something else that bothers me is when people who were brought here as small children by their illegal immigrant parents blame the US government for their illegal status. I'm sorry that a lot of people are illegal despite the fact that this is the only country they've ever known, but they need to accept that their parents are the people who made them that way. Taking responsibility for one's own self and children is one of the most deeply held values in America, and that whole scenario violates this value.

I probably sound bad to some people now, and I don't know what to say about that except that these are things I've observed or felt and I've noticed a lot of other people in America feel the same way.

A driver's license doesn't prove you're legal. If it did, you wouldn't need a passport to get back into the US.

yeah, and that's a huge problem. illegals can get a driver's license, social services and the like. and let's not forget, the cops can't just grab brown people at random and check their papers. there has to be some other kind of police matter going on at the time. the hysteria over something like this that's that's totally reasonable boggles my mind

Something's open it's my heart
If something's missing it's when we're apart
If something's good it's when we're back together again
Nothing's wrong it's just insane
Nothing's right until you're back again.
