Let's argue about "waterboarding!"

Yes, I love surfing!

Just kidding there. I have been hearing this term "waterboarding" for awhile now and I did not know what it was, but it was always described as a terrible act of torture. I figured it was tying some guy to a board and holding him under water or something (ah, my literal mind). I was watching a network news show last night and they demonstrated what it was. You put a cloth on someone's face and then pour water on same face. I guess it is akin to that old B-movie standby, "Chinese water torture." The talking heads then explained why this was such a terrible torture: something about primal fear and drowning. Okay, it this is torture, every water park in America needs to be shut down. The term "waterboarding" makes it seem like something way sinister, but if it is called what it really is, "water face pouring," it sounds pretty goofy. "Hold still, Anwar, I am going to now punch you in the face with WATER." Now if it was a high pressure hose, that would be one thing, but they were pouring it out of a soup bowl. Of course, the network news show might have gotten it wrong, and being the endlessly pliable being I am, I am open to someone convincing me that this is a horrendous practice. Just like the U.S., can't even torture people effectively.

I await your outrage, scorn, and general condemnation.

CL, it's pretty fucked up. Your lungs fill up with water as if you were drowning, which deprives you of oxygen until they pull you up. So you can die from it, or end up with serious brain damage, as well as plenty of other psychological effects it has.

I think the U.S. also prosecuted Japanese soldiers for doing it to POWs in WWII, so yeah, I'd say it's torture. And I don't think many people in the military would even agree that it works.

There you go, they did not say that in that TV report. Thanks for educating me, Joe. All they talked about on the show was the primal fear of drowning.

Joe is right. I was wondering the same thing Lemon, but apparently the cloth is saturated and you only breathe in water....I think the people they are using this on can only stand it for about a minute, then they start talking.

What's ineffective is that they will talk and give a convincing enough story, which will lead to a dead end.

So, it's inhumane, cruel and useless.

Bush's stature has risen remarkably over the past couple of years. In a hypothetical election between Bush & Obama, I bet Bush would have a half-decent chance of winning.

Oh, that's just a cryin' shame, Lord. Half this country just refuses to believe the truth that Clinton left us with a balanced budget and Bush spent us into oblivion. And all the people who keep bitching about Obama's spending to fix the economy never made a peep when Bush was wasting it on not fixing anything.
