Has Anyone Heard of being Prescribed Ativan

for eye spasms? Wouldn't a muscle relaxant be better?

Re: Has Anyone Heard of being Prescribed Ativan

Hi- that's an odd one- ativan is another name for lorazipan- it's a benzodiazapene ('benzos'), ie same family of drugs as valium, diazepan, nitrazepan etc. These are only to be used for very short periods of time (a few weeks at tops) because they are very addictive, and to my knowledge are really only used these days for severe sleep disorders, short-term treatment of anxiety (should always be in association with psychological treatments such as Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy), and to help control of certain types of seizure.

I'm a clinical psychologist and NOT a medical doctor so you need to seek medicap opinion, but in my 17 years or so practice and working very closely with psychiatrists I have never heard of a use for a straightforward muscular spasm (unless, I guess, maybe is it linked to any kind of epileptic seizure activity) and the psychiatrists I work with are extremely cautious about prescribing any sort of benzo at all.

Hope this helps, but please only use this response as a guide to asking questions of a medic, cos I am only writing out my own experience as psychologist in the UK.

Best wishes

David

Thanks David, appreciate your response. I did see my Dr. about this last week, as it has been going on for over two weeks and it is very bothersome. It's not my eyelid that is having the spasms, but right beneath the eye itself. She prescribed Ativan for me because she says it's stress/anxiety that's causing it. Yet, I can't take the Ativan during the day, because it makes me sleepy. I may E-mail her and ask her if maybe there is something else I can take that won't cause drowsiness.

I was wondering if any others ever had something like this that doesn't seem to go away and what they did that helped.

I had a big meeting today and I had to gently put my finger on the area so people wouldn't notice it, others can actually see it twitching. It's really bizarre.

Funnily enough, I did myself about 15 years ago. Developed minor muscle spasm under my eye and in my thumb. Became convinced that I had some terrible degenerative disease (MS, MND or something) and had only real experience of true hypochondriasis and anxiety (so much for being a psychologist then). Doctor said I was fine physically, and soon after I went into some psychotherapy. Spasms ended soon after! (Therapy didn't...!).

Another thought- Not meaning to probe, but are you aware of the causes of the anxiety, or even the anxiety itself. If you are aware of the anxiety, then to be honest a short course of ativan is not going to treat the cause- it's only symptom management.

Isn't that something! Yours ended as soon as you went into psychotherapy. Glad it ended for you, did it ever come back?

No it didn't- plenty of other stuff came up in therapy (and of course my bank balance went down), and, to be honest, some stuff from a pretty f'ed up childhood I'm still working through (slowly but surely, day by day etc), but the spasms were gone for good!

That's okay David. Oh yes, I'm fully aware of the cause of the stress/anxiety, but I've dealt with high stress most of my adult life and I've never ended up getting spasms over it. I do see your point though, that the ativan is only treating the symptoms. Maybe I could try Feng Shui (sp?) or something like that.

Maybe my body is just telling me I can't handle the high stress like I used to. I imagine over time, it builds up in your system. Maybe I should try psychotherapy. How is that different from other therapies?

The wind here is howling like mad, I'm going to go make dinner (before a power interruption) and take my wee pill. Night Night.
