Re: Happy Birthday Mr. Adams!

Ryan is surely one of the finest songwriting talents around today, whereas Bryan stopped being relevant before we all started using mobile phones and the internet. Anyway, here is a copy of what he wrote on his website:

Today is my birthday. Wow. I spent the day traveling home to NYC from Toronto Canada, where I spent the weekend with the worlds most laid back and sweet bunch of folks, the cowboy junkies. It actually turned my birthday while fretting some chords to sweet Jane with them at the end of a very nice session at the trinity church where they recorded their first record. What a gift. It?s a beautiful thing to be alive, and mildly shocking. It was very cold there but even not as cold as you would think and I was able to get splashed one night by the only puddle in the whole city by a passing cab making it crucial I enter into the DVD store that night and buy comfort movies. I got "September" by woody Allen, "girl, interrupted" by whoever, and "glorious" which is a live stand up comedy DVD by historian/ comedian Eddy Izzard who is pretty much a genius if they really exist like unicorns.

I am thankful to be alive, and to be in one piece. I?m thankful for my friends. I?m thankful for the music I get to make with the Cardinals, and I think I feel blue. Not in some kind of over-view, the past coming to visit me again kind of way. Blue like the way girls veins look when you kiss them hard and their skin lays across the grass. Blue like hotels when you are outside them and looking back en route to your destination. Blue like interstellar radiation. Did you know scientists know whether and object is moving towards or away from us in the galaxy by its color? Red or Blue. I cannot remember which means what, but if you read Infinite Circle "teachings in Zen" by Bernie Glassman, you could visualize a circle around anything in the known universe you decided was in your capacity and it wouldn?t matter. It would come back to you. It would be in your field of vision, if you were seeing with your heart. I?m thankful for the rad chocolate cake in the fridge that?s gonna get mashed up in my mouth at some, or many intervals this week. Chocolate is the new chocolate. I?m also thankful for Robbie Williams "Rudebox" which is maybe the best, funniest, most endearing single in centuries, and my badass space twin JJ.

I am happy to be alive today and happy to know that when isolated, the world can correct itself in small fractions at a time, that Phil will be okay, that Brad is very tall and will kick ass if zombies ever come back to life (which they wont because they are under strict orders not to do that and it would break protocol), that on Nov 7th I will be celebrating 6months of being "awake". I can?t really say it?s a holiday from a very strange and blurred journey. I came to the end of one path and took another. To not have to self medicate anymore to try and feel normal is a gift. Not knowing what kind of person I was and what sort of allergies I had to boozing it up was tough, but maybe its true as a person grows older they get to know themselves better. And like my Papa said, I am not like the others. I miss his suits and winding watch, the south of my youth before it seemed boxy and over-ridden with warehouses with dentists office lighting stuffed with bad food and loud advertisements. Lazy southern sun and laying the grass. Horseshoes and people with their cigarettes rolled up in their sleeves. Cars with fins.

New York City has become such a wonderful home and it was nice to get bad mouthed in an intellectual kind of way, without saying it to my face, while I was trying to ask about a record, that some people just make records for their friends and not for monetary gain. French Black Metal. Gosh, is that Metal Noir, and what would their logo look like? Hmmm. Le chat Noir...BLAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Its a full moon and I think about all the musical wizards and people who I looked up to that I met this year. Henry Rollins, the Cowboy Junkies, Mark Strand, Mary Louise Parker, Nellie McKay, Ken Orlin, Juliette Lewis, I even met Jennifer Aniston (well, just said hello, she was leaving her Letterman interview and the Cards were going on, still....... RACHAEL....wtf!) and to tour and kind of see what it is that is really going on out there for once and not be so terrified. And to know finally why I have been unable to sleep for so long.

And my brothers in the band and Phil hovering over me like an angel protecting me from a world he managed to tame and escape the perils from as well. What a magician he is.

32 years old and I just found my first Voivod T-shirt. Boy, did that take a long time.

I don't know what drives me to love music the way I do, to never tire of its alchemy and its ability to heal me or others, or balance light and dark, but I hope to be able to share that gift for years to come, the gift of loving it so completely and with a full heart, no matter what it may sound like, or seem like to people, and I hope I find more ways to share that. In essence, what a person loves is what they are.

Draw a circle around yourself and may it be as vast as the universe and the one outside it. And may it all come back to you in the form of a wish.

Goodnight 31. Good morning 32.

xxxxxxxxxx
David Ryan Adams.

Faron, loved the posting of Ryan's ramblings! Am I to understand from that that the dear genius, Ryan, has been sober for 6 months?! :holy: Good for you Ryan! I had worries for your health. May you live a long life and may you continue to write music and lyrics that find their way into my soul. And may you continue to sing them like an angel as well.

I don't know about Ireland, Jill, but everywhere Ryan played in England last February was sold out. People were outside literally begging everyone for an extra ticket and there were none to be had!

NO comparison between the soppy Disney song writer and Ryan!

I can't speak for all Celts but you do have astoundingly good and ecletic taste in music. I noted "Jacksonville City Nights" on your list of last years best albums. I ended up reaching for that more often than the other 2 releases from that year in the long run.
